Linux!
So, i now have this old lappy running on Damn Small Linux. Its been a bit of an effort, but it's finally getting somewhere. I see a fair learning curve ahead, theres all sorts of weird crap to get used to, I barely know how to install things and I can't figure out why I have no sound (or even begin to fix it). I see it will be some time yet before I posess enough expertise to play some Star Control 2. I do have a messenger of sorts installed and I'm blogging this from the machine, but only on a cable connection as I have not figured out how to get the wireless card working or actually connect to the main compy via the network.
Man that was a waste of a day, and large portions of the previous few days. This machine better work PERFECTLY by the time I know what I'm doing. At the moment I can blame it on my own incompetence, but that excuse only gets an OS so far. At least it boots pretty quickly and hasn't crashed yet. The little internet usage graph is pretty gnarly also.
Its 10.30pm and I'm saying fuck this crap for today. I feel like doing something else now, ie. outside of the house. I'm poor though so I can't really go out. Maybe I can rope Steve into getting me some free pool...

Nuts!
Dammit, just lost my post due to random reset. As soon as I have some blank dvd's, I'm ditching this heap of crap for the old-school laptop. Anyway, the basic jist of my post was as follows:
-Aerospace BBQ was today
-Missed it because email informing me of it was only sent today
-*Assorted abuse of club admin for their stupidity*
-*Expression of disappointment at missing out on the opportunity for sausages with cheese*
-Was invited to join Secret Society
-Well not quite, I was invited to join the International Golden Key Honour Society, an academic socity, membership by invitation only. They say I was invited coz my marks were among the top 15% at uni. Nifty. There are apparantly various benefits, the details of which I am unclear on, cept the most obvious which is that it impresses people if you add it to your resume.
-They have a free bbq first monday back after the holidays, so thats a nice bonus.

Damn brain
The human brain forgets things too quickly, it's very annoying. In particular I'm talking about the precise muscle control needed to play music. I think I've reached a point in my viola playing where I really have to practice quite a lot to get any better. It bites! I work on a piece, get it kind of all right, then start on something else, and after a week of not playing something its gone dodgy again. Unless its fairly easy, like a jig or something, but even those get a bit funky if I havn't practiced them for a while. I don't have that much time to practice a lot either, so it feels like I'm not progressing, though I probably am, slowly. Also my instrument keeps going out of tune, which causes pain to ones ears. This does not inspire one to continue practice.
I should really be playing with a group of some sort, I think it helps a lot (plus it's nice to hear music played by a full orchestra), but I don't know who to play with or when. The two decent orchestras I know of -the Peninsula Symphony and Monash Phil- both practice on thursday night, which is when I have wushu, and i'm doing the wushu dammit!
I'm not giving it up, that for sure. Gotta keep playing music so that when I'm an old man I can sit about the mansion and serenade myself. For this reason I'm making a push to get better at the piano -even though I have no teacher currently-, its such a nice instrument to play to yourself, on it's own I mean.
It's too bad I don't seem to find the time to write much music these days, that was kind of cool.
